Team Armin Seyfried

Prof. Dr. Armin Seyfried, Principal Investigator

Armin Seyfried is one of the PIs of CrowdING, he is also professor at the University of Wuppertal and the head of the Institute for Advanced Simulation, Civil Safety Research (IAS-7) at Forschungszentrum Jülich.
He works on the physics of crowd dynamics. His team at the IAS-7 has developed precise measurements of the location of all participants in experiments over time as well as, new measurement methods to analyse these data and agent-based models to quantitatively describe collective phenomena and transport properties. Over the past 20 years, they built up the expertise to conduct experiments with up to 1.000 people using various sensor systems. In experiments with up to 20 people, the positions can be linked with measures of full-body motion (3d) in a way that, for example, allows them to study very precisely what happens to the body during a crush. The team shares this expertise by supporting research groups worldwide in conducting experiments and making the data from their experiments and software for modelling freely available. The contributions enabled them to resolve contradictions in the literature on central transport properties of crowds. These findings lead to revisions of building regulations and are integrated in new guidelines for building evacuation and the planning of large events.

Martha Friederich, PhD student

Martha Friederich is a PhD Candidate of CrowdING at the Institute for Advanced Simulation, Forschungszentrum Jülich. She is a mathematician with an interest in analysing the spatial characteristics of crowds. With a background in pure mathematics, her research will focus on the development of quantitative measures to precisely capture the spatial structure of crowds and investigate how it changes under different conditions.

Karthik Jayadevan, PhD student

Karthik Jayadevan is a PhD candidate at the Institute for Advanced Simulation (IAS-7), Forschungszentrum Jülich. He has a background in computational physics with research interests in the application of computational modeling approaches to investigate collective behaviour in complex systems. In CrowdING, his work focuses on implementing agent-based models to study different behavioural repertoires in crowds and the transitions between them.

Dr. Pit Steinbach, Post-Doctoral student

Pit Steinbach is a researcher in the CrowdING project and a post-doctoral researcher at the Forschungszentrum Jülich. His background is in theoretical chemistry, where he focused on implementing chemical modelling algorithms on graphical processing units. He has a strong interest and extensive experience in the area of producing musical events, and event security.
His work will focus on extending the capabilities of the pedestrian simulation software JuPedSim. A key goal is to enable simulations where agents with different physical models can be combined. Building this flexibility in the software while coming up with a concept for the interoperability of those models are his main challenges.

Dr. Mohcine Chraibi

Mohcine Chraibi is head of the Pedestrian Dynamics – Modeling division at the Institute for Advanced Simulation, Civil Safety Research (IAS-7) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. He received his PhD from the University of Cologne for work on validated force-based modeling of pedestrian dynamics and completed his habilitation in computer-aided traffic simulation at the University of Wuppertal, where he also teaches. His research focuses on the mathematical modeling of pedestrian dynamics and the validation and verification of simulation models, combining physics-based and data-driven approaches. He is the maintainer of the open-source simulation framework JuPedSim and the trajectory-analysis library PedPy. In CrowdING, he is responsible for supporting model development and validation as well as their implementation in JuPedSim.
