CrowdING

Integrating the physics and social-psychology of crowd movement

For the coming six years, researchers from Forschungszentrum Jülich and the University of Groningen will join forces to explore the dynamics of crowd behaviour. In crowds we see a fascinating mixture of order and apparent chaos. How is it that queues can suddenly break down and turn into a huddle or even a crush?

Funded by the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grants, CrowdING brings together expertise from social psychology, physics, and computer science. The researchers will also collaborate with theatre company Schweigman& to use artistic research methods to better understand the physical experience of crowd dynamics.

The team will compile an extensive “library” of crowd behaviours—walking, running, queuing, huddling, pushing. The goal of CrowdING is to understand and describe the transitions between them.
